RADNOR SAYS GOODBYE
Thirty-five years ago members of the Radnor Hunt held a horse trial, a small effort on a local level. Within a few years, the horse trial was so well thought of that the USCTA (now USEA) asked the group to expand the competition to host an international level event. Since 1975, Radnor has done just that.
One of those original members said that the group should decide anew every year whether or not to continue its efforts. And for all these years the answer has been “Yes!”
However when we asked ourselves the same question this year, the answer was different. Radnor Three-Day has, for several years, experienced eroding community support. This has expressed itself as reduction in sponsorship dollars and volunteers, especially those willing to take on a big responsibility.
We have often joked that we should be called “Timex Radnor Three-Day” because we take a licken’ and keep on ticken’ – and that we have. This event has survived weather disasters, competitor crises, and all the changes that have come to our sport. We have constantly reinvented ourselves, and have learned to do more with less.
The Organizing Committee feels it has come to a point where the quality of competition will suffer should the event continue. We are very proud of Radnor’s heritage as one of the country’s premier equestrian competitions and wish to be remembered as such. We are proud to have served our community with the donations we have been able to make to our beneficiaries. We are proud to have been a part of the success of so many international-caliber riders and horses. We are proud to have so many local citizens and riders who have grown up with this event.
While we still have laurels to rest upon, Radnor would like to thank all those who have supported us over all the years: the competitors, owners, event officials, community members, beneficiaries, sponsors, and most of all, our volunteers. And to all of you, kick on.
